4. SCHOOL-TOURING NEWS: THE CREATION OF “B.U.L.L.Y.”!
As we briefly mentioned in last month’s
issue, Kaleidoscope Theatre
is in the process of mounting a new
school-touring show entitled
“B.U.L.L.Y.” (Better Understanding by
Listening and Learning
about You), which helps schools deal with
the ever-present and
often dangerous issue of bullying. This show
is a sensitive,
participatory presentation offering
solutions via peer education.
A cast of middle and high school students
performs in this show
to create an atmosphere of peer teaching
that has been very
successful for us in the past. In fact, this
show is generating
so much excitement that we already have
several performances
booked for schools throughout southern New
England in November
and December!
Kaleidoscope Theatre’s Executive Director,
Mr. David G. Payton,
writes the script, music, and lyrics to
every Kaleidoscope Theatre
production. David finished writing “B.U.L.L.Y.”
earlier this
year, and we immediately gathered a group of
actors to begin
bringing the script to life. A dozen kids
(ranging from elementary
school to high school) helped offer insight
on the play, and
appropriate modifications were made to
ensure that the play would
reach all audiences appropriately and
effectively. Over the next
few weeks, rehearsals dealt with staging the
show, teaching the
music, and experimenting with different
actors playing different
roles.
The month of October will be spent gathering
more children to
participate in the play and teaching the
show to them. Because
school-touring shows are performed at
schools during the daytime,
those who perform in the show must take a
day out of school.
Kaleidoscope Theatre cares very much about
the education of our
performers as well as our audiences, so we
make sure that all of
our actors are good students who can afford
to miss a day of
school. Only if a young actor is doing well
in school will we
allow him/her to take a day off to perform
with us. If a young
actor performs well in school, and if he/she
has the parental
support and permission to perform with us,
then Kaleidoscope
Theatre will take the necessary steps to
involve that person in
a show. Sometimes problems will arise if so
many schools are
interested in a show that we have
performances booked on two (or
more) days of the same week. When this
happens, it is important
that we have enough young people to make up
several different
casts. This way, none of our young actors
will miss more than
one day of school within a given time frame.
At present, we have so many performances
booked of “B.U.L.L.Y.”
that it looks like we will need at least
three casts of the show
to tour! Therefore, we are asking if you,
our most valued fans
and supporters, know of any talented young
performers who are,
first, good students and, second, have the
desire and talent to
be in a Kaleidoscope Theatre school-touring
production. If you
do, then please have them contact us to come
in for an audition.
They can reach us by calling our office at
(401) 942-3637 or
e-mailing us at kaleidoscope@kaleidoscopetheatre.com.
Please
take a look at our first newsletter to
review our audition
process. It is amazing how many wonderful
and talented performers
we have gotten over the years from people
who see our shows and
know a relative, neighbor, or student who
would be perfect for us!
In the same vein, should you know of a
school, club, or
organization that could use our production
of “B.U.L.L.Y.” or
any of our other touring productions, please
do not hesitate to
contact us!

5. KALEIDOSCOPE THEATRE Q&A:
In this section, we will address questions
that you, our audience
members and our mailing list subscribers,
have about Kaleidoscope
Theatre. To ask us a question, just send us
an e-mail with “Q&A”
in the subject line, and your question may
be answered in the
next month’s newsletter!
This month, Phil writes:
“Your theatre company has so many different
shows. What
are your newest shows, and how do you come
up with the
ideas to write them?”
Well, the newest show is of course our
school-touring show,
“B.U.L.L.Y.,” which is so new that it hasn’t
even been performed
yet! Our newest fairytale musical is
“Rapunzel,” which began
in the summer of 2004. Before that, our
newest dinner-theatre
murder-mystery was premiered in 2001. 2000
marked the beginning
of the fairytale musical “Heidi,” which
followed 1999’s “The
Frog Prince.”
There are many factors which go into
deciding what new shows to
create. The most important source is
audience feedback. At all
school-touring performances, for example,
the teachers, parents,
principals, etc. who are watching the show
are given feedback
sheets which ask them to tell us what they
liked/disliked about
the production. One question that we ask is
what additional
topics we should address with our
school-touring shows. This
is where the idea for “B.U.L.L.Y.,” and most
of our other school-
touring shows came about.
For our fairytale productions, we also look
into the story’s
popularity. The more popular shows always
attract larger
crowds, so we don’t usually pick obscure
fairytales for our
repertoire. “The Classics” always make the
best choices.
Shows that have been mentioned as
possibilities for future
summers include: “Cinderella II: the Story
Continues,” “The
Shoemaker & the Elves,” “Thumbelina,” and
“Tom Sawyer.”
Are there any shows that you would like to
see Kaleidoscope
Theatre create? Or would you really like to
see one of the
shows that is mentioned as a possibility
come to life? Please
let us know what you think, because your
feedback is what helps
us to make all of our decisions!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well everybody, that wraps up this issue of
the Kaleidoscope
Theatre Newsletter! We look forward to
informing you of more
shows and other news in the future, and we
are so grateful for
your continued support of our company!
