1. “Kaleidoscope Theatre is a Rhode Island
treasure.”
Rhode Island State Council On The Arts, Grant Review
Panel
Rhode Island State Council On The Arts, Kaleidoscope
Theatre’s
proposal received support from the Council and, in
addition, the
panel of judges included the following comments:
“Kaleidoscope
Theatre is a Rhode Island treasure. They are the
only group
doing what they do. The artistic quality and clarity
and achievability
of the project ranked high. Good sound does make a
difference in
a performance.”
Kaleidoscope Theatre would like everyone to know
that we consider
the true treasure to be the children. Two of the
toughest jobs in
the world are parenting and teaching and the parents
and teachers
do a great job. They are always looking for the best
ways to guide
and educate their children.
Kaleidoscope Theatre has always tried to be a tool
to be used when
dealing with some of the more difficult and
sensitive of topics.
Bullying, inclusion, and drug education are just
some of the
educational musical productions we are presently
touring with to try
and help the parents and teachers of southern New
England better
communicate with their children and students. We are
so appreciative
of the support we have received over these past
thirty years of
school touring and we know that we wouldn’t have
been so
successful were it not for all the people who have
believed in us.
Using peer education in our touring programs has
meant that we
Seek out and find some of the most gifted and
talented young
performers that Rhode Island and nearby
Massachusetts and
Connecticut have to offer. We never lose sight of
the fact that
it’s the parents who make it possible for their sons
and
daughters to be in Kaleidoscope Theatre by driving
them to and
from rehearsals and bringing them to us on the days
of
performances and picking them up at the end of the
day.
Also, it’s the principals and teachers who allow
these students
to take precious time away from school so that their
students
can then become the teachers who help educate
younger
children. A strong recommendation from a teacher is
a
tremendous asset to a young performer who wants to
become
a member of our company. If you know of a gifted and
talented
student you feel would benefit from our theatre
programs
please let us know. Your recommendation will count a
great deal
in their getting an audition.
To be called a Rhode Island treasure is truly an
honor and
with the continued support of parents and teachers
we will continue
to do our very best to be worthy of it.

3. Kaleidoscope Theatre’s newest show “B.U.L.L.Y.”
B.U.L.L.Y began touring at the end of 2005 and is
having
a tremendous reception. Two local television shows
featured the cast of Kaleidoscope Theatre’s newest
show.
NBC Channel 10’s Education Reporter Kelley McGee
recently did a feature story on Kaleidoscope’s
production.
David Payton who wrote the show as well as the
entire cast
of B.U.L.L.Y. were the topic of Bob Venturini’s well
known
“Hour with Bob”. Cast members performed several of
the
songs from the show for this one hour special.
Because we have so many new newsletter members this
month, we’ve repeated last month’s story about how
the
show was received in its initial performances. Call
us for
more information or to book this show for your
child’s school.
B.U.L.L.Y. (Better Understanding by Listening and
Learning
about You), Kaleidoscope Theatre’s newest touring
school
production, was recently performed at two elementary
schools
in Rhode Island with great success. An early morning
performance
of 250 students grades K-2 brought about a wonderful
reaction
from the audience. A second performance immediately
followed
which was attended by another 250 students grades
3-5 at the
same school. Teachers were very pleased that the
attention
given to the play and its young performers was
almost identical
for each group. The audiences were mesmerized by the
young
performers and listened intently to all that was
said. It was peer
education at its best. Responses from both audiences
before,
during and after each performance were thoughtful
and insightful
with each group coming up with similar questions and
concerns.
In the afternoon, another school, with 300 students,
grades K-5
in attendance reacted with even more excitement and
involvement.
A feedback sheet handed to one of the performers
from a second
grade teacher stated: ‘Great Show!!! Informative and
kid friendly.
Provides kids with alternatives and ways to take
action. The
children listened and watched closely. Held their
attention for the
entire show. Nice job!”
During the Q&A segment following the performances,
teachers
made the statement that all schools in Rhode Island
should have
the opportunity of experiencing this show. The best
way to get
the message out is by word of mouth. Teachers and
parents
promised to contact other teachers in school
districts even
outside of Rhode Island. If you know of a school
that is
experiencing bullying situations please let them
know of our
program. Our production is not a panacea but it will
definitely
give students, teachers and parents a guideline for
dealing with
the all too prevalent and destructive behavior of
bullying.
We again want to thank the Rhode Island State
Council On
The Arts for their support in the creation of this
musical production.
Also, a special thank you to Arlene Violet and Howie
Barte of
920 WHJJ Radio for taping the opening segment for
our show.
