2. KALEIDOSCOPE’S 2006 SUMMER SERIES
Yes, it’s official! Our 2006 Summer Series
has been announced!
We have now scheduled our 2006 Summer Series
at all five of our
usual venues throughout the Northeast: Rhode
Island College’s
Robert’s Hall Auditorium in Providence, RI;
the Chevrolet Theatre
(formerly the Oakdale Theatre) in
Wallingford, CT; the Cape Cod
Melody Tent in Hyannis, MA; the South Shore
Music Circus in
Cohasset, MA; and the Stadium Theatre in
Woonsocket, RI.
We are thrilled to be presenting yet another
season of original
fairytale musicals to audiences throughout
the area in this, our
25th summer season. Our 2006 summer season
will be slightly
different at each venue, but all of our
audiences can expect an
exciting combination of everybody’s favorite
fairytales!
The shows that will be performed this summer
at Rhode Island
College include: Beauty & the Beast, Heidi,
Snow White, Sleeping

Ridinghood, and Jack &
the Beanstalk. Those to be performed at the
Chevrolet Theatre

3. KALEIDOSCOPE THEATRE Q&A:
In this section, we will address questions
that you, our audience
members and our mailing list subscribers,
have about Kaleidoscope
Theatre. To ask us a question, just send an
e-mail to
kaleidoscope@kaleidoscopetheatre.com with
“Q&A” in the subject
line, and your question may be answered in
the next month’s
newsletter!
This month, Betty writes:
“How many fairytales do you perform, and how
do you decide
which ones to do in one summer?”
Our newest fairytale, Rapunzel, is the
twentieth original
fairytale musical in our repertoire.
Additionally, we perform
Christmas versions of four of these
fairytales during the
holiday season. From this assortment of
shows, we pick five to
eight to be performed throughout the summer
at several different
venues throughout the Northeast. While the
selection of a
summer series is usually very fun, it can
also be quite a
daunting task!
One factor that always comes into play is
the popularity of a
show. Everybody loves the classic fairytales
like “Snow White”
and “Cinderella,” so we produce these two
shows pretty much
every summer. You might think it sounds
silly to do the same
shows so frequently (especially since we
tour “Cinderella’s
Christmas” every December), but our
audiences respond well to
these shows year after year, and we love to
give our audiences
exactly what they want!
The venues to which we tour sometimes make
requests as well.
This was the case with Beauty & the Beast,
Jack & the Beanstalk,
and Goldilocks & the Three Bears for our
2006 season. It seems
the children who attend our shows aren’t the
only ones who have
their favorites!
There are technical concerns that must be
taken into account as
well, since some of our shows will be
performed opposite each
other on the same day at different venues.
Problems can arise
if two shows with very large casts are
scheduled opposite each
other, because we only have fourteen
microphones to split up
between them. Similar consideration must be
given to ensure
that back-to-back shows will not require the
same backdrop, the
same scenery, the same properties, the same
costumes, etc. This
is possibly be the most confusing step of
the season selection
process, and is probably the most important.
Just imagine what
a disaster it would be if we realized too
late that the same
wolf costume was needed in Connecticut for
“Little Red
Ridinghood” and in Cape Cod for “The Three
Little Pigs”!
The final factor that comes into play is, of
course, which shows
we enjoy the most. “Heidi,” for example, is
a favorite show
amongst the Kaleidoscope Theatre family, so
we made sure that
we found a place for it in our 2006 season.
Remember, though, that the very first (and
most important!)
consideration is a show’s popularity. So, if
you would like to
see Kaleidoscope Theatre do YOUR favorite
fairytale next
summer, tell us which show you would like to
see and it just
might happen!
