Voted RI Monthly's
"A RI treasure"
|
Our newest
fairytale, Rapunzel, is the twentieth original
fairytale musical in our repertoire. Additionally,
we perform Christmas versions of four of these
fairytales during the holiday season. From this
assortment of shows, we pick five to eight to be
performed throughout the summer at several different
venues throughout the Northeast. While the selection
of a summer series is usually very fun, it can also
be quite a daunting task! One factor that always comes into play is the popularity of a show. Everybody loves the classic fairytales like “Snow White” and “Cinderella,” so we produce these two shows pretty much every summer. You might think it sounds silly to do the same shows so frequently (especially since we tour “Cinderella’s Christmas” every December), but our audiences respond well to these shows year after year, and we love to give our audiences exactly what they want! The venues to which we tour sometimes make requests as well. This was the case with Beauty & the Beast, Jack & the Beanstalk, and Goldilocks & the Three Bears for our 2006 season. It seems the children who attend our shows aren’t the only ones who have their favorites! There are technical concerns that must be taken into account as well, since some of our shows will be performed opposite each other on the same day at different venues. Problems can arise if two shows with very large casts are scheduled opposite each other, because we only have fourteen microphones to split up between them. Similar consideration must be given to ensure that back-to-back shows will not require the same backdrop, the same scenery, the same properties, the same costumes, etc. This is possibly be the most confusing step of the season selection process, and is probably the most important. Just imagine what a disaster it would be if we realized too late that the same wolf costume was needed in Connecticut for “Little Red Ridinghood” and in Cape Cod for “The Three Little Pigs”! The final factor that comes into play is, of course, which shows we enjoy the most. “Heidi,” for example, is a favorite show amongst the Kaleidoscope Theatre family, so we made sure that we found a place for it in our 2006 season. Remember, though, that the very first (and most important!) consideration is a show’s popularity. So, if you would like to see Kaleidoscope Theatre do YOUR favorite fairytale next summer, tell us which show you would like to see and it just might happen! |
